Simon and Jane have worked tirelessly to improve the standard of funerals in the UK.

Funerals have changed greatly over the last 20 years. Many people now are looking for a more personal funeral experience. And they still value and appreciate a sense of sacred ritual to mark the end of a life and the transition of spirit – a funeral with heart and soul rooted in the person’s culture and lifestyle. It is important that each funeral is both a celebration of a life and the mourning of a loss.
Jane Morrell started Green Fuse in 1999 and was soon joined by her husband Simon Smith.
Based on their own experiences of close bereavements they both felt that funerals, and the whole funeral process from the time of death, could be made more meaningful and relevant for the bereaved. After the 2nd World War, the 'modern' generation appreciated tradition, order and standardisation. However the 'post modern generation' is more interested in personal experience, individualism and their own beliefs. Funerals and the funeral process need to reflect this.
With his thought in mind, they sought to help families create more individual funerals. They grew a successful local funeral company (now called Heart & Soul Funerals), which was awarded Funeral Director Of The Year by The Good Funeral Guide. "Jane Morrell and Simon Smith work tirelessly to improve the standard of funerals." Charles Cowling GFG.
Simon's previous career in leadership development, writing a book and devising and teaching courses, made the step to teaching a natural one. Jane and Simon published their book 'We Need To Talk About The Funeral' in 2006. They began teaching funeral celebrancy in 2007 and funeral directing in 2008, joined by Angela Ward, Steve Nimmo and Angie McLachlan to create a highly experienced team of tutors.
